Tamper Resistant Rx Pads
On August 17, Dennis Smith CMS Director of the Center for Medicaid and State Operations issued guidelines regarding the use of tamper resistant prescription pads for Medicaid prescriptions starting October 1, 2007. The guidelines cover the need for use of compliant tamper-resistant paper when prescriptions are written, exempting prescriptions communicated to pharmacies electronically, verbally or by FAX.

October 1, 2007, the CMS guidelines indicate that all prescription pads must contain at least one tamper evident characteristic and by
October 1, 2008, all three characteristics must be present:
- one or more industry-recognized features designed to prevent unauthorized copying of a completed or blank prescription form;
- one or more industry-recognized features designed to prevent the erasure or modification of information written on the prescription by the prescriber;
- one or more industry-recognized features designed to prevent the use of counterfeit prescription forms
