In preparation for building and the equipping of a new hospital in Northern San Diego County, Palomar Pomerado Health (PPH) is conducting a study funded by Cardinal Health to study the relationship between adverse drug events (ADEs) and the use of bedside Pyxis devices. PPH will install a number of bedside Pyxis
® devices in a Critical Care Unit and measure the number and severity of ADEs in comparison to a traditional medication delivery system, while controlling for intervening variables including the acuity of the patient, patient transfers, and patient co-morbidities. Additionally, variables such as patient, physician, and nursing satisfaction; patient length of stay; number of patient transfers; and the cost-per-discharge shall be measured and analyzed. This data shall add generally to the body of knowledge on evidence-based practice and specifically contribute to information concerning acuity assignable care and practice.
