As a health system with deep roots in rural health care, Avera recognized a growing need for patient safety initiatives geared towards small, rural providers and Critical Access Hospitals. In the Saving Lives in Rural Communities project, Avera will adapt the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI)
100,000 Lives and
5 Million Lives Campaigns’ patient safety interventions to the rural environment. The project will help rural facilities identify patient safety processes and measures appropriate to their specific setting. Through a program based on education, resources, recognition, and accountability, Avera Health will provide 21 area Critical Access Hospitals with the tools, education, and motivation needed to successfully adopt the IHI interventions and improve patient safety.
