Cardinal Health Installs New Point-Of-Care Technology System At Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital

Commerce , MI, March 6, 2003 – Cardinal Health, Inc. (NYSE: CAH), the leading provider of products and services supporting the health care industry, announced today the nation’s first complete installation of state-of-the-art bedside entertainment and patient safety technology at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital (HVSH), part of Detroit Medical Center. Designed to reduce medication errors, improve patient safety and increase patient satisfaction, the unique capabilities of Pyxis PatientStation® introduce an entirely new level of service to HVSH. Cardinal Health and HVSH will observe the installation of this milestone technology with a celebration at the HVSH facility today.

With fully secure access, clinicians at HVSH can use Pyxis PatientStation to improve patient safety by accessing a variety of hospital information systems at the point of care. Unlike other health care automation that is available only to clinicians, patients and visitors can also access Pyxis PatientStation to take advantage of a variety of on-line tools including education and training resources, Internet access, email services, television and personalized entertainment choices. The content delivered through Pyxis PatientStation creates an opportunity for patients to take a more active role in their own care.

Pyxis PatientStation includes a tailored application that gives patients more control during their hospital stay. Known as the Pyxis PatientPortal, this unique software interface includes a To Do list, automated patient education manager, on-line meal ordering and web-based surveys and test management. Pyxis PatientPortal reduces the time spent by nursing personnel on administrative tasks, encourages patients to participate in their own care and enhances patient
satisfaction by providing better service and more detailed information at the bedside.

"The long-term impact of Pyxis PatientStation on health care will be significant and we’re delighted that Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital is leading the way with this technology," said Stephen S. Thomas, executive vice president and group president of the Automation and Information Services group of Cardinal Health. " Pyxis PatientStation creates a new category of automation for health care providers that will be key to improving patient safety and patient satisfaction. Pyxis PatientStation improves health care provider productivity and reduces medication errors while patients and their guests benefit from improved information, communication and entertainment options.”

“We are constantly looking for ways to keep our patient satisfaction levels at nationally high levels and we believe this technology will help support this goal,” said Robert Yellan, president of HVSH. “Our patients like having the conveniences of home, even when they are at the hospital. With a national nursing shortage, this technology allows nurses to spend more time on patient care and less time on paperwork. With the ability to access clinical information at the bedside, we believe we are taking a major step forward.”
